Timothy Mathew, accused of robbing a bank in Shreveport, La., this week, is a former St. Michael’s High School honor roll student and athlete in Santa Fe, and the son of a federal judge and a Santa Fe attorney.

Mathew, 22, was arrested around 3 p.m. Wednesday, about an hour after police say he entered a Capital One bank branch, told the teller he had a gun and demanded that she give him money.

As of Friday, Mathew was still being held in lieu of $61,075 bond at the Caddo Correctional Center, charged with simple robbery, attempted escape and resisting an officer. Shreveport Police Department spokesman Sgt. Bill Goodin said Friday that Mathew wasn’t charged with armed robbery because no weapon was seen by witnesses or recovered by police.

A statement issued by the Shreveport Police Department said Mathew left the bank on foot after the teller gave him an undisclosed amount of money.

An online report from a Fox television news affiliate in Shreveport said authorities believed that after the robbery, Mathew may have changed clothes in an Old Navy store and walked to a nearby Whataburger fast-food restaurant. However, Goodin said Friday he couldn’t confirm that version of events.

Goodin said a plainclothes officer spotted Mathew near a street intersection a couple of miles from the bank and called for backup from a squad car. When police converged on him, the report says, Mathew fled on foot but was quickly apprehended. Police said they recovered a portion of the cash from Mathew. Police also said he tried unsuccessfully to run out of a detective’s office at the Shreveport Police Complex while in handcuffs before he was booked into jail.

Mathew is the son of U.S. District Judge Martha Vazquez of Santa Fe and local attorney Frank Mathew. Neither Vazquez nor Frank Mathew returned calls from a reporter on Friday.

Timothy Mathew attended grammar school at the former St. Francis Cathedral Elementary in downtown Santa Fe and, according to The New Mexican’s archives, was listed repeatedly on the honor roll at St. Michael’s High School, where he also played football and participated in wrestling before he graduated in 2008.

“The St. Mike’s Community’s hearts and compassion go out to the Mathew family,” school President Marcia Sullivan said in a statement issued via a spokeswoman Friday. “We do not feel it’s appropriate to comment further.”

Gilbert Marsh, who participated in wrestling and football with Timothy Mathew at St. Michael’s, recalled him as a “normal student who did good. He was a normal guy.” Marsh, now a corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps, said he heard about a year and half ago that Mathew “was trying to join the military,” but Marsh didn’t know what branch.

An acquaintance who did not want to be identified said she was “shocked” to see Timothy Mathew’s picture in the newspaper in conjunction with a crime report. She said Mathew had attended Boston University for two years after high school. A Boston University spokesperson was unable Friday to confirm any information about Mathew.

A spokesperson at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces said Mathew studied anthropology there from the fall of 2010 through the spring of 2012 but did not graduate.

Mathew worked at La Posada de Santa Fe Resort and Spa for a month in the summer of 2011, according to the hotel’s general manager, who declined to say what job Mathew performed there.

According to online court records, Mathew was arrested in January of this year on charges of aggravated DWI and driving on the wrong side of the road in or near Albuquerque, but the case was later dismissed by prosecutors.
