Several inmates from the Southern New Mexico Correctional Facility came to the aid of a driver who stopped breathing after a car accident.

State corrections officials say one of the inmates who took turns performing CPR on the man was former Santa Fe attorney Carlos Fierro.

Fierro was convicted in the drunken-driving death of a pedestrian in 2008.

A van carrying an inmate work crew was nearly hit by a truck that veered off a highway Tuesday morning in Las Cruces.

The truck went through barbed wire fence and came to a stop about 100 feet away from the inmates’ van.

The driver appeared to be in cardiac distress. A corrections officer and several inmates helped remove the man from his vehicle and render aid until an ambulance arrived.
