Warrant roundup nets 4 scofflaws

Local law enforcement teams served four warrants Saturday on people with outstanding warrants for drunken driving.

Since the beginning of Operation Descansos, 898 warrants have been served through arrests and surrenders.

The Department of Public Safety Special Investigations Division supported by the Santa Fe Underage Drinking Prevention Alliance in collaboration with the police and sheriff's departments conduct monthly warrant roundups for DWI offenders. The program is funded by the state Department of Transportation.

In addition, Crime Stoppers has offered a reward to anyone with information regarding crimes or the location of DWI offenders with outstanding DWI warrants. Callers will remain anonymous and could earn a reward of up to $2,000 for information that leads to an arrest in these cases.

Artists sell wares at St. John's

The New Mexico Spanish Colonial Artists Market at St. John's College on Saturday will feature nearly 30 artists and booths offering bultos, colcha, straw appliqué, retablos, weavings, woodcarvings and other traditional work.

New this year is a lecture by historian Orlando Romero at 10:30 a.m. Romero, who said he was one of the original santeros of Spanish Market, will talk about the evolution of the event.

The market is in the Great Hall of Peterson Student Center at St. John's from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. There will also be music by Carlos and Vickie Otero.

Rowe Mesa forest project planned

A public meeting is planned for 7 p.m. Thursday to discuss the new thinning project on Rowe Mesa funded by a federal Forest Service grant.

The project would involve thinning and prescribed burns on 17,500 acres of Santa Fe National Forest land in the Pecos/Las Vegas Ranger District. Thinned trees will be available to local communities for firewood.

The Rowe Mesa project is designed to restore the mesa's grasslands and reduce the risk of large, hard-to-control wildfires. It is funded through a Collaborative Forest Restoration Project grant to the University of Arizona.

The meeting will take place at the Arroyo Hondo Fire Station, 645 Old Las Vegas Highway.

Center offers free HIV tests

Free and anonymous HIV tests will be available from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at Santa Fe Community College courtesy of the Southwest CARE Center.

The results of the tests will be available 10 minutes after testing and counselors will be available to discuss results.

The testing will take place in the Witter Fitness Education Center on the campus of Santa Fe Community College at 6401 Richards Ave.

County seeks road committee volunteers

Santa Fe County is seeking volunteers to serve on its Road Advisory Committee. The committee reports existing road conditions on county roads and assists the county in planning future roadway improvements.

Meetings of the 15-member board will be held at 6 p.m. on the second Wednesday of every other month in the conference room at the county Public Works facility.
