Parade float seeks 'fat cats'

People dressed as fat cat Wall Street bankers, politicians with plutocrat money sticking to their clothes, an inflatable shark, a fancy convertible. Those are the elements of a float being planned by We are People Here! for Sunday's Historical/Hysterical Parade.

The parade kicks off at 1 p.m. at DeVargas Mall at North Guadalupe Street and Paseo de Peralta and winds around the downtown area.

Those associated with the float, "Plutocracy on Parade," will be dressed in red, white and blue. Some will be wearing refrigerator boxes and pretending to be corporations. According to organizer Nichoe Lichen, they still need people to represent the environment, education cuts, foreclosed homes and the jobless. Quaker recalls snack bar

Quaker Oats Company issued a nationwide recall of 8-count Chewy Smashbar Graham Pretzel snack bars because the packages failed to include a warning for customers sensitive to milk products.

People with allergies to dairy products risk serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they eat the snack bar, according to the state Environment Department. Recent shipments of the Chewy Smashbar failed to include the disclaimer "may contain milk."

In Santa Fe and statewide, Albertsons, Lowe's and Smith's grocery stores, Walmart and Target all carried the snack bar. Kaune's Foodtown also carried the product.

The New Mexico Environment Department is coordinating the state's efforts to recall the product. Recalled products are limited to those with the UPC bar code ending in 31108.

One person in another state had an allergic reaction to the product, but no cases have been reported in New Mexico, according to the Environment Department.

Consumers can return the unopened product to the retailer for a refund. The Chewy Smashbar Graham Pretzel is the only Quaker product involved in the recall.

Dixon's apples on sale Saturday

The owners of Dixon's Apple Orchard have arranged a one-day sale of its apples away from the flood-damaged orchard at a store in Cochiti Lake.

The sale is set for 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday Sept. 24 at the C Store parking lot in Cochiti Lake, according to the Dixon's website.

The orchard's website says that the recent floods have left the orchard unsafe for customers to enter.

Customers will be asked to bag their own apples with $20 for a bushel bag and $10 for the smaller peck bag. There is a one bag limit per customer.
