Santa Fe resident Kathy Myers and her Arabian gelding Blue finished the 24-hour, 100-mile Tevis Cup from Lake Tahoe to Auburn, Calif. with a few minutes to spare this morning.
Riders had to complete the ride, the oldest and toughest horse endurance race in the United States, by 5:15 a.m. Kathy finished at 4:53 a.m.
The only other New Mexicans in the race, Roger Downey of Corrales, N.M., and his mule Crystal Palos, the last entrants in the 203-rider field, finished the century ride at 4:09 a.m.
Crossing the finish line isn't enough to complete the race. Veterinarians have to sign off on the mounts as "fit to continue."
The Tevis Cup has been held since 1955 on the rugged Western States Trail in California. The same trail is used by runners in the annual Western States Trail 100-mile ultramarathon.
