Freshman Ida Valencia led four Pecos girls basketball players in double figures with 16 points as the Lady Panthers picked up a 56-40 home win against Santa Fe Preparatory in District 2AA on Wednesday.
Valencia added seven steals while Brittany Gallegos finished with 14 points, 12 rebounds and four assists. Diamond Montaño chipped in with 11 points and three blocks. Point guard Kiana Trujillo had eight points and four steals, assists and rebounds.
Pecos (13-8, 2-2) assumed a commanding 36-12 lead at halftime, but the Blue Griffins (5-15, 0-3) used an 18-5 run in the third quarter to make things interesting.
"Our first half was one of the worst first halves we've played all year," said Anika Amon, Prep head coach. "It was pretty horrific."
Amon said the Griffins were held to six points until the final minute of the first half. They scored another six in the final 45 seconds.
Things changed dramatically in the third quarter. Prep's Olivia Cicci had 11 points in the third quarter, including three 3-pointers. She had a team-high 14 points and helped Prep get within seven at one point.
Maddie Fort finished with 11 for the Griffins.
"We expended so much energy getting back into it that we didn't have anything left," Amon said.
