When I first heard "Born This Way," the lead single off Lady Gaga's album of the same title, I was stunned by the musicality of the song.
Gaga channeled the spirits of soul singers from the '60s during the song's duration. The length of the song made me think that she's moving toward writing smarter music.
Her third album as a whole, however, utterly disappoints with jerky, disjointed songs that feature boring writing and overused pop elements. Oh well.
The first problem is "Marry the Night," the album's first track. Its refrain is repeated over and over again, until it seems like a joke.
Moreover, while the lead single is supposed to be empowering and describes the importance of hard work, the truth is that Gaga herself was born into wealth, went to an affluent Roman Catholic private school, and bought her way into a profession that seems to reward those who will sing anything they are told to.
Born This Way doesn't feature music progression; rather, it's a composition of jumbled songs that have nothing distinctive about them except for her trademark stuttering. That's how it is in mainstream music, though; most pop singers are little more than different voices singing similar songs. Even the spoken German in "Scheiße" is underplayed and adds to the mess of the album.
Let's stop this while we still can. Don't buy the new Lady Gaga album.
